How to use:

Using posters about notable Arab American doctors who have made history can be a powerful educational tool in the classroom.

Here's how you can effectively use them:

  1. Introduction to Arab American History: Begin by providing context about Arab American history and the contributions they have made to various fields, including medicine. Discuss the significance of recognizing and celebrating diversity in the medical profession.
  2. Poster Presentation: Display the posters prominently in the classroom where students can easily see them. You can create a bulletin board or dedicate a wall space specifically for this purpose.
  3. Discussion and Analysis: Encourage students to examine each poster closely. Discuss the background and achievements of each doctor featured on the posters. Ask open-ended questions to promote critical thinking and engagement, such as:
  • What challenges do you think these doctors faced in their careers?
  • How have their contributions impacted the field of medicine?
  • What can we learn from their experiences and achievements?

  1. Research Projects: Assign students to research one of the doctors featured on the posters in more detail. They can create presentations or written reports summarizing the doctor's life, accomplishments, and impact on medicine.
  2. Reflection and Discussion: After students have had time to explore the posters and conduct their research, facilitate a class discussion about what they have learned. Encourage students to share their thoughts, insights, and questions about the contributions of Arab American doctors.
  3. Connection to Current Events: Discuss how the achievements of these doctors relate to current events and issues in healthcare, such as diversity in the medical workforce, cultural competency in healthcare delivery, and the importance of representation.
  4. Inspiration and Career Exploration: Use the posters as a source of inspiration for students who may be interested in pursuing careers in medicine or other STEM fields. Encourage them to explore their own interests and talents, regardless of their background.
  5. Celebration and Recognition: Take time to celebrate the achievements of Arab American doctors and other underrepresented groups in medicine. Consider organizing an event or ceremony to honor their contributions and raise awareness about the importance of diversity in healthcare.
