EASY TO USE! As teachers, we know what kind of grade a piece of writing should receive. However, too often we end up trying to make the rubric 'fit' to the grade we want to give. Not the case for this rubric! It easily fits to the standards of the common core for persuasive writing AND easily fits to the traditional 90, 80, 70, etc. grading scale. This particular rubric is for 8th grade, but the file should allow modifications for any middle school grade level.

Begin this activity after students have completed an argument rough draft. Using highlighters and this revision checklist, students will mark up their own text to prove to themselves (and their teacher) that all required components for an argument essay have been included. Revision is the most difficult part of the writing process for kids, but using this tool forces them to add, change, and delete until the checklist is complete. This activity is especially helpful for visual learners.
