Introduction to black history month
This flipchart is one I use to introduce the concept/idea of black history month to my students. It begins with a song about Martin Luther King, then has picture examples of the words past and present to help my kids understand what we mean when we say the "past". Then there are pages of examples of black athletes, musicians, actors, etc. At the end there is a video "black history alphabet" I hope this simplified way of introducing black history helps your class as much as it helped mine.

Ostinato and Dave Brubeck's "Unsquare Dance"
Students will move and perform to the classic Jazz tune by Dave Brubeck. They learn the ostinato and clap and march to the ostinato in a fun circle dance and can also play along with the bass line. Essential and ELA questions are provided to connect to literacy.
A follow-up lesson has the students composing their own ostinati and performing for their peers. A Common Core classic!

Every year during the winter my students and I love to make paper quilts. There is so much American history in the topic of quilting. African Heritage-MArtin Luther King Flipchart
I created this 8 page ActivInspire Flip chart to teach my special needs kinder class about important people who have made a difference. Focusing on Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and Ruby Bridges, students will have the opportunity to learn about each person and how they fought to make a difference. The goal is for students to be able to label each person with the correct name by matching and to colour using appropriate skin tones.
