Addition and Subtraction Strategies for Parents: Base Ten, Number Lines & More!
This is a quick introduction for parents on four different strategies for solving addition and subtraction with re-grouping - base ten blocks, using a hundreds chart, adding on a number line, and expanded form.
I'm using this to send home to parents so they can be familiar with our problem-solving strategies and help their kids - we didn't learn this way and it's the #1 thing parents are confused about at conferences.

This English and Spanish activity is perfect for using math in real world experiences. Ideally kids go grocery shopping with an adult and record what they buy, then show their math! If students cannot physically go to the story, I allow them to make up some items and the prices. They have to add decimals (I will differentiate to whole numbers if kids aren't able to add decimals yet), then find the change from their $50 budget.
