"We Were There, Too": Compare and Contrast, Journeys 3.15, Smartboard
This Smartboard Notebook file is a companion for the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (2012) Journeys fifth grade story "We Were There, Too". Students complete a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the characters Sybil and Joseph. My students score higher on comprehension assessments when they complete organizers like this while reading.

This Smartboard Notebook file is a graphic organizer for the Journeys-5 selection "Vaqueros: America's First Cowboys" (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012), lesson 5.23. Students add main ideas and details to the organizer. There is also a summarizing exercise. My students score better on comprehension assessments when they use a graphic organizer while reading. The format of the exercise mimics items on the Smarter Balance ELA practice test.

Say It In Six SmartNotebook file
The Say It in Six activity allows students to focus on the key story elements when summarizing a story. While students are reading, I have them make a list of important words. Then, after reading, students are to select the six words that best summarize the entire story. Each word is written in one of the boxes and they use it to retell the story to the class, and/or write a summary. I have also had the students work in groups, and as a group they need to come up with six words they all agree on

I use this activity with "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury. I included a link in the document to a copy of the story I found online. I do not know if the story was uploaded legally. Please obtain your own legal copy of the story.
This is easily edited to use with any short story.
