You can ask Siri on an iPhone “What planes are flying over me?” and she will tell you exactly that. But exactly how far out of a radius does Siri report planes? This activity will help you and your students use trigonometry and angles of elevation and depression find out! Applications include the use of tangent AND cosine! There are several versions of this activity all in one download! The first version is a printable activity where the data is provided and a map is provided. The second a

This is a brief encounter with vectors: After the nine lessons the student should be able to translate the skills gained herein to other disciplines. Four lessons including review and quiz for both plane and space vectors with a bridge discussion (see the preview) of similarities and differences between 2 and 3 dimensions summarize the unit. Modeling with Sinudoidal Functions - Foxes and Rabbits

Created by
Morrison Math
Sinusoidal functions are a staple of Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus but the modeling problems in the textbooks are always so dry. I can't stand any more weights on a spring or riders on a ferris wheel! I wanted to make a problem that would be more interesting than the classic textbook tropes and I also wanted students to experience data that could be modeled this way. Of course, data is never perfect so the data provided here can be modeled with sine or cosine but no model will completely exact.

I think that when we use technology in the classroom with our students, we should teach them to use technology as a tool. One of the best applications for using a spreadsheet in class is in the solution of triangles. After my students have mastered the laws of sines and cosines with handheld calculators, and are familiar with the ambiguous case, I have them redo the same problems using excel. It is a very challenging activity for them. NOTE: Your students will need to have access to a comp

All you have to do to generate a new quiz is press F9! It's that easy! Make a different quiz for every year, for every day, for every class, or for every row of desks in your room, if you desire. To make the quizzes as distinguishable as possible for the teacher, I have included 1) a randomized 4 digit qu

Trigonometry Teachers! Are you tired of using the laws of sines and cosines to calculate accurately the unknown sides and angles of triangles? Are you frustrated at the time it takes to generate two solutions to "the ambiguous case" when there are two possible solutions for a triangle? Look no further: I've written this spreadsheet just for you! (Well, actually, I wrote it because I kept making mistakes when I tried to generate solutions on my handheld calculator, but I found it so handy,
Preview of A Rotation of Axes

A Rotation of Axes

Created by
Orrin White
At the high end of applied Trigonometry in Analytic Algebra or Precalculus courses we encounter the Rotation of Axes, always with conics. There is a practical use for this technology because it teaches us to interrelate quantities in different frames of reference. The actual rotation requires significant calculations and the theory is developed by the trigonometric difference and multiple angle formulae. It's always a chore to do one of these rotations - but your students should be aware tha

We solve triangles using the three laws: Cosines, Sines and Tangents - in addition we show derivations of the three laws and, in the case of the law of tangents, Newton's Formula. As our presentation is rather parsimonius, we offer talking points in the vocabulary section. We suggest the use of the Law of Tangents for both SAS and SSS solutions. And,demonstrate the traditional use of the laws of Sines and Cosines as well. The unit is completed with a discussion of SSA and the ambiguous case.

This is a pictorial derivation of the sine and cosine of the sum of two angles. It has helped us to understand the outcome by actually seeing the quantities in play. And, for our visual students, the concept is solidified. We suggest that you use this as a handout to accompany your presentation in class. The verbiage is parsimonius - but we offer some talking points in the Vocabulary section. AA Geometric Derivation of the Trigonometric angle sum formulas by Orrin White is licensed unde
