Elf Movie Math Problems

Need a fun activity the week before winter break, but don't want to totally have kids turn off their brains? I like to show the movie Elf (PG) and give my students these guided notes, which include math problems aligned to the plot. The problems are related to ratios, geometry, general arithmetic, speed, and unit rates. The problem set has time guidelines so students can keep track of when the problems will come up in the movie. The movie can be rented on Amazon prime for less than $5.

You know what sucks? Entering in equations in Word. This product does that work for you. This product provides plenty of practice with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with UNLIKE denominators. Students are then asked to reduce the fractions and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers. You can either assign it all at once, or complete one page/operation at a time. This is a great homework assignment, warm up, review assignment, or "do when done" task.

The rules of how to work with positive and negative numbers are important because they are in our daily lives. Things such as balancing money, temperatures, and of course for math in school. When teaching how to use for multiplying/dividing rational numbers have the student use counters or their hand to cover the signs that are in the problem. The sign that is not covered is the sign of the product or quotient. ex. -2 x 4, have the student cover a negative and a positive sign what is not covered
