Independent Reading Conference Form and Fiction and Non-Fiction Reading Logs
Included are three different forms that can be used for conferring with students about their reading. Two of the forms are more comprehensive for independent reading and one is more oriented to quicker check-ins when students are reading any text in class. Common Core Close Reading (The High School Annotation Survival Guide)
Close reading a text is an essential skill to teach, especially in a high school English class following a Common Core aligned curriculum. My annotation strategy teaches students to record the gist of each paragraph or chunk of text on the right and talk back to the text using symbols on the left. For the gist, students first must determine the type of noun the chunk of text is about. They then decide what is being said about the noun.
