Time Signatures Overview
This Smart Notebook file contains an introduction to Time Signatures. Perfect for intermediate elementary students, the file includes 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, and 6/8 time. After a basic overview of the concept of time signatures, I have included two different types of activities to practice their skills: sort a set of given rhythms into 3/4 and 4/4 time, and draw in the barlines in a given time signature.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight
This is an orchestration for use with grades 3-5 or special needs students. Simplified notation is used to allow access for all learners to playing in an ensemble. There are parts for boomwhackers, keyboards, xylophones, recorders, shakers, drums, and hand or desk bells. This file is for Notebook software to be presented on the Smart Board or printed individually for students. It is fully modifiable.

A Basic Lesson on Copyright and Intellectual Property
This 30-minute lesson (which could easily be extended to almost an hour, since your students will have a lot of questions) introduces students in grades 4 and up to the basic ideas of copyright law. Students will:

Rhythm Connect Four Game
This is a fun way for students to practice reading rhythm patterns, and to reinforce the concept of four-beat patterns. Show on the smart board and have the whole class play in teams, or have smaller groups of students play as a music centers game.
This game is played just like a real Connect Four game, as students drag and drop colored chips into spaces on a board. Once a player or team gets four in a row, they have to read the rhythm pattern correctly for it to count as a win!

Elementary Music Vocal Warm Ups
These are a great way to start your Elementary Music class by having your students do a vocal warm up!
You can start them by playing a slide whistle to follow the shape of the line, and they can use their voice to mimic, until they are able to read the shapes themselves.

Dynamics in Music
In this SmartBoard activity, students demonstrate their knowledge of dynamics. It is best used as a follow-up to lessons in dynamics or as an assessment piece. The activity can be done together on the Smartboard, or printed off and completed by individual students as written assessment.

Bass Clef Lesson with Flash Cards
This is a lesson that introduces notes on the bass staff, as well as B above the staff and middle C. After an introduction to the staff, a 30-card quiz is used to reinforce the note names. Students identify the note shown by writing the answer on a line, then remove the screen shade to reveal the correct answer. This is great for both individual and group work, and can be made into a competitive or non-competitive game as needed.

Instrument Vortex Game: Woodwinds or Brass?
This is a Smartboard activity that can be used before AND after students learn about instrument families. The vortex accepts correct answers and "throws back" incorrect ones, allowing students a second chance. It can be also done in teams and is a quick time filler/review for the few minutes you might have at the end of class. An easy lesson for a substitute as well!
