This is a comprehensive unit to teach Matter in the fifth grade. This unit is based on California and Common Core reading standards. This presentation will review the meaning of symbolism through a definition and pictures. It then uses colors to show how symbolism is every where and how colors can represent different emotions, situations, etc. At the end of the presentation, there are directions on how to complete the color collage project where students assign a color to a memory and create a collage depicting the memory through pictures.

Easter Butterfly Art - He Is Risen!
Students will choose at least 10 spring words to write on their butterfly. Then they will color the butterfly and glue onto a spring colored construction paper. The life cycle can be colored and glued to the backside of the butterfly.Tip: Print out pages 3 and 4 as "two pages on one sheet" to save paper. You can reuse them every year!

Choice Board Commonly Confused Words
Tic-Tac-Toe Choice Board for Commonly Confused Words. I require students to complete three of the activities in a tic-tac-toe order, but this is an editable Word document, so you can alter it to best work for your classroom. Historical Fiction Genre Study
This is a historical fiction "job board" when engaging in a genre study. This includes a tic-tac-toe board for students to manage their independent work choices. I introduce each activity, one at a time, and then students are able to choose the path they'd like to travel. We use as many historical fiction resources as possible so they have lots of choice.

Rhymes to Read
This is a quick and easy lesson to help students learn colors, while coloring and reading some of their favorite classic rhymes. Each page deals with one single color for students to color in, and some pages give them a chance to draw in missing characters. This lesson has been used in kindergarten and special education classes and I've always had great results for students who have had trouble remembering their colors.

Compound Work Maker
A flap book for compound words. Fold on the solid black line, then students cut on the dotted line. On each side, you write the separate word of the compound and a picture. Then, in the middle, the compound word is written and a picture can be drawn. My students loved doing this!
