Determing Relative Age of Rock Layers: An Investigative Approach

Created by
Kool School
In this activity students get a chance to apply their knowledge and understanding of paleontology to determine the relative age of rock layers and what types of conditions existed to produce them, as well as conceptualizing the use of index fossils to gleam information about Earth's geologic history.

Pangea (Pangaea) and FOSSILS: Come Explore and Answer HOW WE KNOW!

Kids know about Pangaea but do they know WHY WE THINK PANGAEA ONCE EXISTED? Probably not! Everyone knows about the puzzle fit but is that really enough scientific evidence? No way. In this activity, come explore the relationship between Pangaea and index fossils. This activity is a portion of the larger fossil tutorial/matching/identification LAB posted on TPT. FULL VERSION CLICK HERE Students begin with a tutorial on fossil terminology (definitions and images): cast fossils, mold fossil

Calculating Height Forensic Anthropology Worksheet or Lab

Great addition to your Forensic Anthropology Unit. Students either use given measurements or measure in-class models if you have them of the human arm and leg bones to calculate the height of the person that once used those bones. Calculation chart give students a formula for calculating the height in centimeters -- then walks them through converting that height to inches and feet and inches. Successfully used with 7th & 8th graders in my CSI exploratory course. Answer key included for th

Fossil IDENTIFICATION LAB: No Actual Samples Needed (Rave Reviews)

Part of the Full Version listed below: FULL VERSION CLICK HERE ------------ No fossil samples, NO PROBLEM! Go back in time and experience a ONE OF A KIND fossil identification lab. Prior to the identification lab, fossil types and terminology is covered to prepare the student for the different types of fossils. The fossil identification lab incorporates 20 samples in which each sample has a lab image, correlating image, information and fun facts, and lab description. SO MUCH FUN! Fossil I

Geologic Timeline Activity -Students create timeline using adding maching tape.

Created by

For this activity I use rolls of adding machine tape- you need something at least 460 + a little extra cm long. Students use a meter stick to mark off TODAY. Then, leaving the meter stick in 1 spot, they mark off each of the periods at the correct measurements. Students then add in important events in geologic time onto the timelines. The result is a LONG roll of geologic time! A great VISUAL to the hard to conceptualize geologic timeline.

Hominid Skull Analysis

A fantastic lab for evolution! To me, evolution is a difficult unit for students to have real lab experiences. You can study natural selection through several investigations, but few allow us to take evidence on patterns found in the past. This investigation challenges students to evaluate 6 hominid skills through anatomy observation and measurement using a simple ruler allowing patterns in evolution to emerge. The answer key is provided and follow-up questions ask students to outline next steps

How do scientists determine the absolute age of a fossil? What is radiometric dating and how can we use isotopes to determine the age of something that may have lived and died before recorded history? This detailed lab activity explores the science behind radiometric dating and easily and clearly provides students the opportunity to model the phenomena and practical applications of this knowledge.Students will research, collect data, model, and report their findings. All MeiOlogy labs include CER

Geology of Virginia WebQuest

Created by
Hunter Hall
This webquest has students visit the website https://geology.blogs.wm.edu/ to research the geology of Virginia. The assignment is broken up into physiographic provinces, features many helpful images, and introduces students to the geologic timescale. This can be completed in class as a lab or given to complete as sub plans.

Anthropology - garbology!

This engaging hand-on activity is designed help your students understand the archaeology of contemporary trash (garbology!) through an exploration of their own trash. Anthropology - garbology! works well as homework, a distance-learning activity or an in-class activity. Your students read about three fascinating garbology projects, sort, organize and analyze their own trash, and then write a report of their research, just as an archaeologist would. This package comes ready to use. It contains ev

In this lab, students practice correlating rock layers to determine the relative ages of fossils. The pictures in this lab were created as shapes in MS Word, so they do not get grainy when printed. :-)Note: Parts of the lab refer to the ESRT. This is New York State's Earth Science Reference Tables. Even if you don't teach in New York State, they are a fantastic resource (both of information and to help students practice finding information elsewhere, which they will often do in the real worl

This lab will allow students to look at cladistics through comparative anatomy of animals. The beginning of the lab provides students with background information to what cladistics is, and how biologists determine relatedness among organisms. Students can use specimens in the classroom, or by doing internet search for characteristics.

Hominid Evolution: Exploring Physiology and Dispersion of Humans Through Time

This lesson is focuses on the topic of Human evolution. Most states now require evolution of the hominids as part of the biology curriculum. Engaging and interesting lessons on this topic are difficult to find. I have put together a multi-day lesson plan that meets the standard criteria for this topic. This lesson pack includes all instructions and associated worksheets. The lesson examines the two main hypotheses for human origins, the Out of Africa Hypothesis and the Multiregional Hypothe

This is just the data and measurements needed to create a Geologic Time-line of the Cenozoic and Mesozoic Eras hands on lab activity using a cash register tape. This helps students visualize and experience the great period of time and events that have occurred in earth's long history. Even though this only covers the 2 most recent eras it demonstrates how closely spaced the recent events of history are when compared to the larger geologic eras. I recommend buying my full Geologic Time-line Lab
