Community Engagement - Creating Public Art: Digital Story
This Digital Storytelling Unit is designed to be completed over the course of three to four weeks. Students, working in teams of three to four, will explore core curricular content and be required to make an engaging and creative short video about that content. This Digital Storytelling unit is part of a larger initiative called Meridian Stories (www.meridianstories.com).
Each Digital Storytelling Unit:

These two handouts can be used to evaluate and analyze relevant or historical current event artifacts such as political cartoons or articles. I have used this with both current news events as well as events from history such as Colonial U.S. political cartoons.

Lesson Plan: Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit"
This lesson plan allows students from grades 8-12 and college level to learn about the history of lynching and racial oppression in the United States through the lens of American culture. It focuses on Billie Holiday's song "Strange Fruit" (Time Magazine's "Song of the Century") and offers teachers and students multiple topics to explore: Lynching and the Culture of Racism; Women in Jazz; Poverty and Drug Addiction. It can also be adapted to many different grade/maturity levels.

I have been teaching MAUS and the Holocaust for the past five years at least. During our unit, we discuss what is important when telling a historical story, when listening to the story of others, and when trying to understand the human experience.
