This is an exercise in providing text-based evidence in the written response. It is based on the human rights story "Freedom on the Menu", by Carole Boston Weatherford, about the Greensboro sit-ins in the 1960's. Students will read excerpts from the book and analyze characters' behavior to answer questions about them while including text-based evidence.
This activity supports Grade 5 Common Core Writing Standard W.5.9: "drawing evidence from literary texts to support their analysis".
