Description

Zheng He DBQ - Print & Digital

Zheng He was a famous Chinese explorer that made a total of seven voyages between 1405 and 1433. During this time, Zheng He spread China's wealth and power, established foreign relations with other nations, and added to the growing list of China's tributary states. Upon the return of the seventh voyage, Zheng He's ships were destroyed, and China became isolationist. In this activity, students will read about Zheng He and examine seven documents to determine how the Chinese viewed the outside world. They then will complete a writing assignment at the end, answering the following prompt: Describe how Ming China, through the voyages of Zheng He, viewed the world outside of China.

A warning note to the teacher: this resource does include primary source documents in which various non-Chinese cultures are depicted as being barbarian. Some of the descriptions have racist-sounding comments. No matter what grade level you teach, this is an excellent opportunity to open up a discussion about what racism is and how it can be addressed.

If you want an even more in-depth look at this product, please check out the Preview. I have included pictures of most pages you will get with this purchase.
