Description

This is a lit log for You Are Here Connecting Flights edited by Ellen Oh, a cofounder of We Need Diverse Books. This is a fantastic book for middle grade readers.

The 12 stories come from the authors’ own experiences. But each author writes about a 12-year-old American of Asian descent who is impacted by racism/prejudice in a crowded Chicago airport. Events cause the 12 strangers to connect. They experience the challenges of racism/prejudice, identity and belonging, younger siblings, friendships, multigenerational families, and diversity.

Key focus skills in the lit log are:

* use text to explain, draw inferences, analyze

* determine theme, central idea, summarize

* describe, compare/contrast, analyze characters, setting, events/plot

* use text to determine meaning of words/phrases

Reading level of text: 5th/6th grade

Interest level of text: 4th-8th grade

This lit log can be used/modified for direct reading instruction (literature circle, guided reading, novel study) or as a guide for a read aloud.

I hope this lit log is helpful and you and your student(s) enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed reading it.
