Description

This is a Bikram Yoga Style Lesson Plan I developed for my Phys Ed class as part of a School Initiated Course I developed. Included in this lesson plan are the general and specific learning outcomes students will be practicing.
Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures that are usually done in a heated room to help support the sweating out of toxins and the ease of lengthening muscles when they have been warmed to help support rehabilitation of ailments.

The lesson is an apx an hour long, but can be tailored to suit your needs. The lesson includes breathing exercises, modifications for each pose, a list of the key benefits for each pose, a picture showing the proper form for each pose as well as the learning outcome each pose is achieving. Each posture can be done once (for both left and right sides apx. 60 mins class) or twice (both left and right sides for 90 minute class).

The English and Sanskrit names are given for each pose as well. I have also included a Yoga Asana Performance Rubric to help asses students.

Also included is a closing journal/sharing activity, an option for meditation, as well as a spiritual law practice for the day.

This lesson is good for any students in middle/high school, as well as adults and homeschoolers. This can be used as part of a Dance class as well which helps with strength, balance and conditioning.

For a nice treat, choose one pose and have students take a time out in the middle of class, whether they need to be settled down or energized, there is a pose for it all (a great trick for some easy, creative classroom management). Even have competitions to see which student can hold a pose the longest without losing balance.

You can even tie in the history of Yoga or use this as part of a cultural activity lesson.
