Description
This lesson will help your secondary student write a well-developed paragraph.
Students receive a quote based on Civil Rights (the lesson can be easily adapted to use quotes of your choice). Students respond with a well-written paragraph. Every fifth person gets the same quote.
This is an excellent chance to begin Close Reading. Students will make connections and inferences from these quotes!
The PowerPoint gives specific instructions on each slide, including the example quote and “one student’s response,” which shows students a good introductory sentence as well as a good wrap-up sentence.
Students gather with other students who have the same quote to discuss. The PowerPoint provides discussion prompts.
Once each group has become “masters” of the quote, students will be grouped in jigsaw fashion. Each group will now have a writer with DIFFERENT quotes. Now, each student will be responsible for discussing the quote with authority. He has heard several students respond to the quote and he will now present all responses to the jigsaw group.
Students actually get excited about their response and discussing.
Multiple Common Core Standards are addressed as students are responsible for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and presenting.
PowerPoint, Lesson Plan, and Individual Worksheets are included.
The lesson keeps writing short, sweet and fun. Students enjoy discussing after they write! This activity has been successful in my classroom. Enjoy!
