Description
Narratives! I say this with an exclamation point because narratives are one of my favorite things to write with students. While Common Core has asked teachers to integrate more non-fiction and informational writing, this does not mean that creativity and narratives have been thrown out.
I think you and your students will love this Common Core aligned unit. Included in this unit are teaching notes, a pacing guide, suggestions for mini-lessons, and a student "writer's notebook" that allows them to refer back to any of the mini-lessons that you teach and can serve as a guide for further narrative study.
In this unit, students will explore the following concepts:
-idea formation and what makes a good story
-building characters and characterization
-the building blocks of plot
-how dialogue, detail and description make writing come alive
-balancing dialogue and narration
-using smooth transitions/transition words
-show-not-tell
-honing revision and editing skills
Students will also have the opportunity to self-assess and celebrate their writing work at the Publication Celebration. You will also have a standard-aligned rubric which you can use to assess their mastery of the standards listed.
Please note that when you purchase this unit, it is meant for one teacher use only. If you would like to share (which I would LOVE for you to do), please purchase additional licences. Please also note that the material in the unit is copyright of Jen Maschari and cannot be re-posted, re-published, or re-distributed in any way unless express permission is received from the author (except for classroom/student use).
Thank you so much! If you have any questions about this unit, please feel free to contact me.
