What educators are saying

I am teaching a creative nonfiction class and this is a great resource not only to get students to look at successful children's books, but also to layout their own book.
I used this resource to help me create my own project that was somewhat similar and it is a great resource, that helped the starting process of us writing our science storybooks. I loved the research papers which helped students understand the different aspects of different storybooks.

Description

Creating a Children’s Book – Complete Project Grades 6 - 9 – 12 – University – Adult, is an exceptional journey by which students will research, strategize and use technology, critical thinking and art to make a complete and professional picture book. This project will be fun. It will also be challenging and by the time it is finished, students will definitely understand more about the picture book industry, the types of books that sell, how a book is actually put together, and how many decisions are required. This Complete project is a master course of critical thinking, text and illustration analysis, planning, strategizing, etc. that features writing, discussion, technology and art!

Furthermore, because students are applying all learned skills towards an actual created product, this project increases: enthusiasm, interest, personal investment and ownership of the outcome, effort and pride in a job well done.

Students will:

Survey a full gamut of successful and award-winning picture books;

Analyze numerous texts and their text features to determine what makes a picture book successful;

Compile findings individually and later in group discussions to draw conclusions about the features the best picture books have in common;

Apply newfound knowledge and original ideas in prewriting and graphic organizers;

Strategize and plan ALL the features that make will make up THEIR original picture book including content, pagination, font, illustration and more;

Create a finished product (using software, paper book, or original technique) that is engaging and appropriate for a specific age range.

Please note that this is easily usable at the college level, or for adults who want to write a picture book.

This also a challenging and rewarding Middle or High School project that fulfills at LEAST the following Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.7 Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.9 Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.

What Do You Receive?

Handouts for all steps of prewriting, organization, planning, up to the “mock-up” stage. This means that students will have a mini version of exactly what their actual picture book should look like.

While cutting, pasting and using paper and a scanner is always an option, we also provide information for ordering blank paper books for students to draw and write in, OR, free software for students to create in once they have finished the heavy work! There are even a few websites for e-publishing, should students want to go ahead afterward and go that route.
