What educators are saying

I used this with my inclusion class as one of our station work centers. This made it easy for them to write on a topic they knew about and enjoyed and had strong opinions on. It also let to some great debates.
I loved using this in my new writing centers. The kids loved it! They were able to get really creative with their writing.

Description

Writing Battles is a "Keep It Fresh! Writing Center" in which students practice persuasive writing through a “battle topic.” Through the writing center materials, students are guided through the planning and writing of a persuasive essay. Use it as a writing center, a writing station, or individual writing activity.

Each of my "Keep It Fresh! Writing Centers" is designed to engage students in fresh writing practice without having to create a brand new center each week. Each writing center focuses on one form of writing and uses simple ways for you to easily change it and keep it fresh!

With Writing Battles, a battle topic is introduced in a head-to-head format. For example, one week’s battle topic might be: “Cookies vs. Cake: which is better?” The student chooses a side and develops their opinion with reasons, and writes their essay with the aim of convincing their classmates that one is better than the other.

As a follow-up to a writing battle, also included is Writing Battles: VOTING. This bonus center is a way to allow classmates to come to a conclusion about which topic won the battle. Students read the battle papers written the previous week and vote for the winning topic.

Check out the PREVIEW for a closer look!

Within the resource, I explain how to set-up and organize the writing center using a two-pocket folder and a couple of sheet protectors (*NOTE: Folder and sheet protectors are not included in the resource). This way, everything students will need is contained within the folder, allowing students to simply grab it and go!
