Description

Celebrate school heroes and teach writing standards at the same time! In this resource, students choose a school employee they admire, develop an interview plan, interview them, and then work in small groups to publish a small newspaper about school heroes. You'll build school community and also build student writing skills.

The lesson is made up of three activities that can be done over a series of class periods. You'll get everything you need to make a great experience for your students without a lot of preparation on your part.

You'll get teacher instructions, classroom procedures, and rubrics. The teacher directions are so detailed! You will have very clear, step-by-step instructions for what to do to teach the activity.

SCHOOL HERO: In this activity, students will work independently to think about somoene who works at their school whom they admire. They will discuss and develop questions to conduct an interview with this person.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: In this activity, students will work with a partner to develop deep and thoughtful questions to use to interview the shcool hero they have chose. They'll conduct an interview with this person using the questions they drafted.

CREATE A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: Students will collaborate in groups to bring all of their interview work together. They'll choose newspaper templates and put together a newspaper and choose a title.

This lesson is based on Williams' Model of Creativity, a model designed to develop the traits of creativity in students. This particular resource focuses on these traits:
