Description

This is a sixteen slide Powerpoint presentation that has directions for students and many different images of propaganda from World War One. I use this before I cover war poetry and All Quiet on the Western Front.

The second and third slides define propaganda and give directions for students as they take notes on the images. For each image, they:

1.) Write down what the image is persuading the viewer to do (i.e. join the military, buy war bonds, etc.)
2.) Write down how the image is persuading them (i.e. reinforcing patriotism, insulting "cowards" that don't support the war effort, etc.)

I go through the entire presentation with students, and they have to answer the above two questions for each slide on a sheet of paper. Afterwards, this makes for great discussion of rhetoric, and we also discuss modern advertisements/propaganda as well.
