Word problems are an important part of every math curriculum, but many students find them dull and boring. This unit aims to provide a fun (scissors! glue!) and engaging (seasonal themes!) way for students to exercise their problem solving skills.
There are four themes for each month through the year.
- September: apples, football, snacks, school supplies
- October: bats, treats, spiders, pumpkins
- November: acorns, leaves, owls, pie
- December: gifts, candy canes, ornaments, stockings
- January: mittens, penguins, snowballs, cocoa
- February: candy, valentines, stickers, cookies
- March: clovers, basketball, kites, coins
- April: bunnies, chicks, soccer, umbrellas
- May: bees, butterflies, flowers, beach balls
There are seven word problems for each theme, each involving a different addition/subtraction situation. The seven situations are:
- putting together
- putting together with three addends
- adding to
- adding to with three addends
- taking from
- taking apart
- comparing
With four themes for each month, you get 28 word problems per month and a total of 252 word problems for the year.
That's a lot of word problems -- but it gives you options! The large number of word problems in this unit provides an opportunity for differentiation. One student can work with two addends while another student works with three addends. One student can work with small quantities while another student works with larger quantities.
Cut-and-Paste Word Problems can be used for whole and small group lessons, morning work, early finishers, sub tubs, math stations, and more.
HOW TO USE
- Students cut out and manipulate pictures for a hands-on experience. Students paste the pictures to create an illustration, which aids in comprehension and understanding of addition and subtraction situations.
- Students may fill in the blanks and choose their own numbers, or you may choose numbers for them.
- Tip: Consider asking students to complete their number sentence before gluing their picture pieces down. If they paste too early, they won’t be able to manipulate the pieces.
- Alternative Use: Skip the cut/paste and draw pictures instead.
- Alternative Use: Laminate a copy, cut out the picture pieces, add a dry erase marker, and you have a low-prep math center
The best part? You can use these tomorrow. Just print and go.
