Wonders 6th Grade Word Work Bundle

These differentiated spelling word work practice pages are perfect to help your students master the spelling words. The words align with the 2017, 2020, and 2023 Reading Wonders™ program, though you do not need the program to use this resource. These spelling practice pages contain 4 different sorting activities for each week. Students sort the words according to the directions each day. Then they type/write the results of the sort on the pages/slides.

Each week there is a different spelling pattern presented to the students. This product contains word work activities for words with short vowels, long vowels, frequently misspelled words, r-controlled vowels, compound words, irregular plurals, inflectional endings, closed syllables, open syllables, suffix -ion, vowel alternation, prefixes and suffixes, Greek and Latin prefixes, and consonant alternation, consonant +le endings, homophones, words from around the world, Latin roots, Greek roots, and suffixes -ive, -age, -ize, suffixes -ible and -able, suffixes -ance, -ence, -ant, and -ent, Greek suffixes, absorbed prefixes, and words from mythology.

Rationale - Even before being able to read, students can begin sorting. They can sort pictures by beginning sounds, ending sounds, vowel sounds, number of syllables, etc. Students also learn how to spell words they don’t think they know how to spell by comparing words through sorts. Knowing how to spell familiar words gives the students reference points for knowing how to begin spelling new words.

The process of sorting words into various categories is the heart of word study. Categorizing different words by certain elements helps students make sense of words and patterns within words. These word sorts combine both constructivist learning and teacher-directed instruction.

The more students understand about the structure of words the more efficient and fluent their reading will be. Word sorting activities emphasize the exploration of patterns that can be detected in the sound, structure, and meaning features of words. Thus, word sorts not only improve spelling, they increase reading and writing skills.
