This unit includes higher level thinking questions, and a post-reading writing activity. Other ideas for post-reading activities include acting out a scene from the story, but changing an element. (Camp scene – but Auggie’s hearing aid actually saves the day.) There are other ideas on the websites listed below.

You may choose to have students read the book together as a class, and discuss the questions, use the questions as prompts in journals, or a combination of both. Another option is to use the questions for students to read the book at their own pace, or as a guide in a book club. Most of the questions are from DOK levels 3 and 4, which are higher level thinking questions.

Because most of the questions are open-ended, I didn’t create an answer key – it wouldn’t have helped much in correcting or assessing answers. Once you start reading the questions, I believe you’ll understand. There is a writing activity, which focuses on character voice, for a post-reading class project.
