    ■ "I am Someone's Daughter, Too" speech transcript (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez)

    ■ "Gender Equality" speech transcript (Emma Watson)

The activities are great for grades 9-12. The themes and content are most appropriate for older kids, high school students, or upper-middle school (8th grade).

The reading and analysis questions are rigorous. Students will be required to read closely and use evidence in their responses. The speeches students will read have compelling, jaw-dropping, and remarkable arguments that will energize them to discuss and raise their awareness on gender equality.

Students can complete this activity independently with very little teacher guidance. There are clear directions on the handouts. You can relax while students work. The packet can be used for classwork, homework, flipped learning, blended learning, distance learning, Google classroom, and extension activities.

    In this activity, students will...

    1. Evaluate the speaker's persuasive techniques by reading the speech

    2. Annotate by answering comprehension questions

I've been a teacher for over 10 years, and my original questions and variety of question types ensure students have a literal comprehension (the "who, what, when, where") of the text, and also a deep understanding of the speaker's arguments and persuasive techniques (the "how?" and the "why?"). I've written thousands and thousands of text-dependent questions that get your students to think critically about the most important issues of today.
