Ready for some winter themed writing practice? This resource gives students an opportunity to practice an elaboration strategy for narrative writing by using sample sentences and applying a simple technique! This growing sentences technique is a clear and concrete way for even your most struggling writers to add details to their sentences!

Five Senses Elaboration Strategy Resource:
With this activity, students can add details to their stories by using their five senses to elaborate on what they experienced. Use this as a whole group or small group activity. It can be used to teach a strategy before writing, or as a revision tool to revise and add more details to a story that students have already started!

Growing Sentence Write The Room
With this activity, students will get up and moving to practice the elaboration strategy of growing sentences. This strategy teaches students to answer the questions "where, when, how, and why" to write a detailed sentence. Students can roam the room and fix the sentences that are posted by using the growing sentences strategy. Or, you could put this is a center and use the cards as task cards.

Narrative Writing Sheets
The great thing about this resource is the versatility that it allows! You can write a story together on a shared experience, like having a fire drill. Students can write individual stories about experiences, or you could take students outside for a walk and use your five senses to describe what is around you! This strategy allows students to see all of the sensory details that should be included in a story when writing.
