Description
NEW PRODUCT! If you’re looking for a FUN and FRESH STEM activity for Winter for grades third through sixth, then this Engineering and Design challenge is just for you! This low prep activity will have your students excited to practice their science skills in engineering and design! Students use the provided materials to brainstorm, design, and build a fast sled that holds a small plastic animal and test it in class! Students record their plan and reflect on their design in the editable student lab sheet. The STEM Challenge is in PDF format, but the student lab sheets are EDITABLE, so you can edit them to meet the needs of your students and to more closely align to the NGSS Performance Expectations you are targeting!
This STEM Challenge includes:
- Problem
- Task – Design and Build
- Criteria – Rules and Constraints
- Materials List – Suggested (you can add others on the blank lines)
- How You Will Test – Description on how students will test and collect data on their product (if applicable)
- Student Lab Sheet (generic version can be edited to fit their needs/age group)
If you loved this product, check out the STEM Challenges for Every Month that includes this one and 12 others for less than half the price (over $25 for just $10!) Check it out here! STEM Every Month
This resources aligns with the following NGSS Performance Expectations for elementary and middle school:
3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
