This pack has several hands-on phonics activities for winter. Most are differentiated so they can be used with a variety of ability levels.

You can use these as independent literacy centers or during small group guided lessons.

  • Snowy Word Fill: (2 options: Add silent e to words or add a short vowel to the words.)
  • Real or Silly: (Several options silent e, CVC, blends with short vowels, vowel teams, bossy r)
  • Onset and Rime Match (2 versions: Silent e and short vowels)
  • Diving for Diphthongs: Fill in correct spelling for vowel sound. (4 versions: ou/ow, ai/ay, oa/ow, oi/oy)
  • Sledding through sounds: Read the CVC word. Then, find the matching picture.
  • Marshmallow Sort: Sorting word families (CVC, blends, ng/nk words, silent e, and syllable division patterns)
  • Snowball Sound Push: Option 1 has a picture. Students will count the sounds. Option 2: Students will read the words and count the sounds (not letters).
  • Word Match: Matching two-syllable words.
  • Snowboard Blends: Mix and match different initial sounds with different endings.
  • Spin a Word: Spin two spinners to make a word. Record the real words. (3 options: Silent e, VCV, and vowel teams)
  • Roll, Plow, and Read game board (2 versions)
  • Syllable Sort: Read the word. Count the syllables.
  • Stacking up Words: Use a word matrix to make different words (base word with prefixes and suffixes)
  • Build a Word: This is similar to Stacking up words, except you get to build your word matrix by thinking about what prefixes and suffixes can be added to the base word to make new words.
  • Phrase-Picture Match: Read the phrases and match to the correct picture (CVC, silent e, blends, digraphs)
  • Say it, Tap it, Spell it: Phoneme-grapheme mapping (several versions)
