What educators are saying

My students loved the movement exploration walking through the snow and getting to act out the story. It worked very well for my students that needed extra language support and provided an accessible way to understand the foundations of rhythm.
Love, love, loved using this with my littles! We had so much fun doing all the movements and working on compositions together.

Description

Incorporating books into your music classroom is a great way to get students hooked on reading AND music. This book based music lesson take your elementary music students into the picture book world of The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.

In this lesson, kindergarten and first grade music students will to a movement activity inspired by the book, make up their own compositions using iconic notation, and learn how to put that on the staff.

This lesson is intended for kindergarten and first grade students who are not reading rhythms yet. Everything is in iconic notation.

Students will start with a movement activity. This is an embedded Youtube video with movements inspired by the event in the book. The movements go along with the 1st Movement of Vivaldi's Winter.

Then students will learn how to read patterns with footsteps in the snow. Then they will create their own patterns either as a class on the Google Slide show or individually with the printable manipulatives that match the lesson.

Finally, students can take those compositions and create melodic patterns on sol and mi (called high and low in the lesson).

Includes:

  • Lesson plan
  • 32 Slide Google Slides lesson based on the book The Snowy Day
  • Printable iconic notation rhythm manipulatives
  • 2 printable composition sheets
  • Embedded Youtube video movement activity with Winter by Vivaldi
  • Teaches melody and rhythm
