Description

This unit is a two lesson mini unit that has amazing lessons, activities, and learning opportunities for your students to understand wind and hydroelectric energy with on a deep level. This all-inclusive unit contains everything you need for your classroom to become proficient with their knowledge of this standard of alternative energy sources including two lesson plans, 7 printable worksheets, science stations, activities and lesson summarizers, a 28 slide power point with excellent animations and a two page, twelve question, end of unit assessment!

This comprehensive lesson addresses the following guiding question: “How can moving water and air be sources of energy?” Your students will build a solid foundation in the alternative energy sources of wind energy and hydroelectric energy and how wind and water that possess kinetic energy can be excellent sources of electrical energy. This unit has excellent visuals and several different examples for them to learn from and think critically whether they are answering a higher order thinking or quiz question from the power point, or they are using the energy stations or unit assessment to test the rich knowledge they’re learned in this unit.

In lesson one, students will take notes on their interactive notebook learning map provided, while they listen to you teach a direct instruction lesson that goes along with the 28 slide animated power point included in this product. Your students will learn so much from the carefully thought out animations included in this presentation. You won’t see power point animations like this anywhere else with custom clipart and well thought out and carefully timed animations.

Lesson two is an investigation activity where students will rotate through different science stations and analyze the higher order thinking questions and answer intelligently. In station one, students will be given two pictures labeled “energy source A” and “energy source B” and will be asked to think and respond to the questions and pictures to prove their knowledge on each energy source. In station two, students will complete a reading comprehension passage and answer three response questions based on the passage. The passage is entitled: “Wind Energy – From Moving Air To Electricity.” Station 3 is a wind turbine diagram cut, paste and color activity that the students will love and makes for an easy grade. Station 4 is a worksheet in which students will read, think and diagram to further their understanding of hydroelectric energy and how it works. Finally, station 5 is a research and record activity that can be used as center 5 in a computer center, or as a computer lab or mobile cart day in which students will research other alternative sources of energy like bioful, geothermal and solar energy and then think critically about how alternative sources of energy can change and help the world around us.

This unit will fill at least three science blocks but potentially even four or five depending on the length of your science period. To finish off the unit, students will have the opportunity to take a 12 question end of unit quiz to assess their knowledge about everything they have learned about in this unit. I

Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. Examples of devices could include electric circuits that convert electrical energy into motion energy of a vehicle, light, or sound; and, a passive solar heater that converts light into heat. Examples of constraints could include the materials, cost, or time to design the device. Devices should be limited to those that convert motion energy to electric energy or use stored energy to cause motion or produce light or sound.
