What educators are saying

My students really were engaged with this activity. They didn't realize that there were different copies of the test and the discussion that followed was priceless! I would highly recommend this as a way to begin the discussion of equal vs. equitable. Thank you so much!

Description

Do you want to create a more inclusive learning environment for your students? This lesson will introduce your students to the concept of equity, diversity, and inclusion through hands on group activities, discussions, and reflective journaling. This is an excellent resource for fostering inclusive learning environments, teaching students the power of mutual respect, collaboration, and empathy. All of these elements are important if we, as educators, want to provide safer learning spaces and bully free zones.

The lesson begins with a mock test taken in groups. One group is given a copy of a test in English. A second group receives the same test but in Braille, and a third group receives the same test in Spanish. The goal of this introductory exercise is to stretch students' thinking about the concept of FAIR. Students will then have the opportunity to discuss and share their reactions as they are guided to understanding why Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion matters.

Objectives:

Students will learn to:

•Understand the importance of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for ALL learners.

•Demonstrate openness to new perspectives and the diversity of others.

•Listen effectively and demonstrate appropriate, respectful intercultural communication across a variety of cultural contexts.

•Make connections from one’s own culture/experiences to other cultures/experiences.

•Demonstrate empathy for others.

•Harness the power of diversity by working collaboratively to co-create an inclusive learning environment.

This is the first session of a combined series that I have taught to students, parents, and teachers. This PowerPoint will provide you with a step by step guide to facilitating this lesson and is taken directly from the numerous workshops that I have done for both students and teachers on this topics.
