Description

What Does a Scientist Look Like? is a week's worth of dual-functioning plans. On one end, you can learn more about your students' beliefs and mindsets and use these plans to address various social issues juxtaposed with the field of science.

PLEASE READ: This activity is great to use if you teach a diverse group of learners -- especially if your students may be underrepresented in the field of science. This can apply to all students because of age, but also is relevant to students based on gender, ethnicity/race, background and so forth.

This activity requires you to be comfortable with having meaningful conversations about how what we see/hear about may affect our beliefs, but should not affect our abilities.

The takeaway here is that it's not about what the scientist LOOKS like that makes him/her a successful scientist...it's about what the scientist DOES.

On the other end, you can use these plans to simply set strong expectations for behavior throughout the school year.

If you seek a culturally relevant science classroom, this is a great gateway to conversations with your students.
