What educators are saying

This was such a fun way to practice partners of 10! We used it with our countdown to summer R is for Rainbows! It was simple for the students to put together and an awesome learning tool for them to use.
My students loved this activity and it really helped them with their number partners. They used it for all of our lessons with making 10.

Description

Engage students in math and creativity with a Ways to Make Ten Math Craft. They will cut, color and assemble a rainbow to discover the number pairs.

This craft is a fun way to help your students develop a solid understanding and recall of the Rainbow Addition to Ten strategy - the paired combinations of numbers that total ten {0 and 10, 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6 and 5 and 5}.

It is perfect for hands-on learning. I have found that students do not get a clear understanding of the 'rainbow ten' concept until they have made this craft and play with the numbers to understand the pairs and how they correspond.

A great tip is to have your student trace their fingers along the arc of the rainbow to see how the two numbers are linked.

A recording sheet is also provided.

For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
