WIDA ACCESS Practice ESL Bundle for Advanced ESL--Tier C

WIDA ACCESS prep? No problem! Use this all-in-one WIDA practice bundle for your Advanced ESL students! All 4 domains and all WIDA ELD standards are covered in this bundle. No prep is involved except for the task cards (you might want to cut them out to give to each student). Read below for the descriptions of each product.

ESL Reading: Each reading has a 1-page passage followed by two pages of multiple choice answers, just like the WIDA format. The language and questions are designed to assess student knowledge of English rather than pure content because that is how WIDA is structured. This is a great practice to enhance reading skills and stamina and to get students accustomed to the style of WIDA. These readings are best for WIDA level 4 ESL students and up. There are two readings in this product: Ruby Bridges and 2022 Winter Storm, so that both Language of Social Studies and Language of Science standards are covered. The questions pertain to general understanding of the text, so word choice and synonyms, to context clues.

ESL Listening (BOOM Cards): This deck is a practice test or activity to prepare ESL students for the WIDA ACCESS exam. This is a listening comprehension, language arts-based deck. The topic is Emily Dickinson and her poetry. Recordings range from facts about Emily's life, to synonyms and vocabulary usage, to interpretation of a message.Students do NOT need poetry knowledge--all information needed to answer the questions is IN the recordings (so that you are measuring English language proficiency). However, this deck does connect to and support core content from the ELA classroom.

ESL Writing: This product will help raise your students' writing scores by preparing them fully! The product contains writing prompts for WIDA ELD standards 2, 3, 4, and 5 (Language of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies). Each prompt comes with a short bit of background knowledge and a content specific writing task.

Students do not necessarily need to know any specific content past 6th grade, but they do need to know how to multiply single digits for the math task. Other than that, the focus is entirely on the writing and HOW they use writing to get their point across, regardless of the content area. For the ELA task, students are given a poem by Robert Frost (The Road Not Taken). They must interpret the poem and explain what they think it means. The focus here is not on whether their interpretation is correct or nto, but rather on how they use writing and text evidence to support their opinion. For the Social Studies task, they must aruge whether or not the Mesopotamian King Hammurabi's code of laws were fair or not (several examples of the laws are provided. Students do not need to know them). For the Math writing prompt, students must explain how they would measure a carpet for a living room and if it will fit the area. For the Science writing task, students must explain the steps of a simple experiment with ice cubes and melting time.

ESL Speaking: Help your students prepare for the speaking section of the WIDA ACCESS test with this product. These speaking task cards can be used in class or at home as a homework assignment with FlipGrid. The cards cover a variety of topics, verb tenses, and vocabulary so that advanced ESL students have a challenge. The topics are familiar ideas that students grade 6 and up will be familiar with.
