3 DIFFERENTIATED LABS IN ONE!
Materials needed for Level A.
Materials NOT NEEDED for Level B and Level C.
What a great way to introduce and teach both volume and precise measurement using graduated cylinders, beakers, and test tubes!
Students use red, blue, and yellow food coloring mixed with water at different concentrations to produce base concentrations of red, blue, and yellow colors. Using these primary colors, students create the secondary colors of orange, green, and purple. The final product is a set of 6 test tubes, each with the same amount of liquid in the order of a rainbow – ROYGBV.
Level A (generally college prep/honors): Completion of the actual lab with the following materials: graduated cylinders, test tubes, test tube rack, water, food coloring, glass beaker, and water dropper. Warm up questions about volume incorporating graduated cylinder practice and the definition of a meniscus. Students are given a detailed procedure insuring a low risk for error with check offs after each step. Students then complete a data table summarizing the final color and final liquid amount. The activity concludes with questions and a real-life scenario application.
Level B (college prep alternative option/special education): Liquid measurements are provided as cut and paste or laminate and Velcro. Cutouts include specified color and amounts in milliliters. Lab materials NOT REQUIRED. Warm up questions about volume incorporating graduated cylinder practice and the definition of a meniscus. Very special cut and paste or Velcro and laminate activity that challenges many learners based on how the information is presented. The instructor decides the difficulty! This has been used on a 6th grade science day with high acclaim all the way to an introduction college meteorology class.
This works well for any level but is GREAT for special education students or college prep learners that need an alternative assessment and may not be great at traditional labs.
Also, perfect for homeschooling!
WIDE RANGE OF ABILITY LEVELS! The application to a diverse body of learners, whether it be age or ability level, is predicated on the fact that the instructor determines the difficulty level of the whole activity or part of the activity based on what information is given and what information is not as well as how verbal questions are presented to the student(s).
This is a thorough and DYNAMIC activity. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.
