Description

When you're happily reading, unknown words are like shark attacks: sudden, vicious, and a total bummer, man.

Use this one-page graphic organizer to deconstruct a Vocab Attack! This activity hits the entirety of CCSS standard L.6.4, L.7.4, or L.8.4 (grades 9-10 use L.9-10.4.a, c, and d). “I can” statement and self-assessment are included.

Part 1 asks students to use the acronym WHOA to make a preliminary, educated guess on its meaning:

• Word parts/affixes?

• Have I heard this word (or one like it) before?

• Outside knowledge about it?

• Around-the-word (context) clues?

Part 2 asks students to cite a denotative definition, the connotations or contexts for it, and write at least one sample sentence.

Also included: Two variations of a vocab log to track words over time.

WAIT! This item is INCLUDED in my Vocabulary Epic Bundle for Secondary ELA. Check it out to save big on a YEAR of vocabulary!
