Description

Topic of this video: Focus, Directrix of Parabolas

Unit: Radicals, Exponents, Complex Numbers, Factoring

Course: Algebra 2

Video Duration: 18 minutes and 34 seconds

This video:

  • Goes over the conical form of a quadratic equation which reveals its vertex, and where the focus and directrix are easy to find
  • Explains what the focus and directrix of a parabola are and that a parabola is the locus of point equidistant from the focus and the directrix
  • Goes over and explains an example where the equation is given, and you are asked to find the vertex, focus and directrix and graph it.  Shows the connection between the vertex, focus and directrix using the equation and the graph
  • Explains an example where the directrix and focus are given, and you are asked to write the equation.  The graph is used to explain the connection visually.
  • Explains an example where the equation and directrix is given, and you are asked to find the focus.  The graph is used to explain this connection visually.

Hello!  I created this video for students to learn this topic independently.  This video is a tool you can use to teach, preview, reteach, or just have as an additional resource.   The video uses student-friendly language and explains topics as simply as possible.  If you’re teaching remotely, this video is invaluable.

The video consists of my hand-written pdf file of my notes,  and as I explain each concept and example, I point an arrow to the work I’m explaining.   In the videos, I do not show my face, nor mention any names, nor show any photos, just the math is shown and my voice is heard.  Thus, this video can be used in any classroom.  All videos are in English.  When you purchase this, you will receive a zip file which includes the video and the pdf of the notes which are explained.   What you see as thumbnails for this product is the pdf file.

I usually assign a video as homework and ask students to write down everything for their own notes.  I then check their notes as evidence that they completed the assignment- but of course, you’re welcome to use this resource in any way you want.  During in-person schooling, I have a flipped classroom and my videos are crucial to its success.  In remote learning, I use the videos for every topic I introduce, and students find them extremely helpful.

I hope my videos can help you out too!
