Vertical Alignment- Why is it helpful?Β

  • Standards have a clear progression of learning that builds upon each other from one grade level to the next. These standards can seemingly be overwhelming to educators trying to get a clear picture of the flow of content. Each standard and benchmark are tied together within a strand, within the subject. Having a vertical alignment of standards means that the standards are categorized by the strand, standard, benchmark and organized alongside each other according to the grade level. Having a clear, vertical progression of standards can help with planning- whether it’s a classroom teacher ensuring that expectations are met or a team of teachers partaking in Vertical Planning. All in all, vertical alignment allows for an educator to discuss, dissect, β€œunwrap” or deconstruct standards, and PLAN with ease!

Vertical Planning- What is it?Β

  • Vertical Planning involves a team of teachers from different grade levels coming together to link lessons, skills, assessments, and curriculum. Vertical planning helps ensure that a school is meeting the expectations of their students in a way that is developmentally appropriate, research–based, clear, and consistent.Β
