Vehicular Vengeance! - Crime / Mystery Synthesis
- Google Docs™
Description
This student centered assignment draws upon many of the skills and standards required in an English or language arts course. Students must close-read texts, make annotations, synthesize, present arguments, and use effective listening and speaking skills in a group setting.
The set-up is straightforward. Students are placed in groups (typically 4-5 students per). Each group is given the included packet of clues that must be scrutinized in order to present a solution. The clues reveal little on their own, working as pieces that fit together to solve part of the puzzle. Some basic code deciphering is involved (instructions included). Students would benefit from having access to the internet to look things up (like famous quotes).
To be candid, I've never created a more successful lesson. Engagement levels were incredible across all skill levels. Included are generic names set at a generic high school, but if you get permission, I would consider changing the suspects and the school to people around your building. It makes the students' interest that much higher. Have fun!
