What educators are saying

My students enjoyed the engagement with the dice as well and being able to pick different aspects to put together to make sunflowers! It supports a lesson I have in the school year already!
After studying Van Gogh, this was a fun activity for students to create their own take on his masterpiece.

Description

Learn to draw a vase of sunflowers while learning about the artist Vincent van Gogh

Your students will not only learn about van Gogh but also do some art criticism (talking about art) during the presentation. Then they will have a blast making a sunflower drawing with Expressive Monkey’s fun approach to drawing. When they are finished with their drawing (which can be turned into a beautiful painting), students will practice art criticism again by describing their own art. There is even an easy goal-setting slip to encourage students to use the elements of art and principles of design (definitions included)

So if you are looking for an engaging drawing activity with some art criticism (writing and talking about art) opportunities, this will be sure to fit the bill.

Here is a summary of what you can do:

Learn about Vincent van Gogh

Use the van Gogh presentation to introduce your students to the artist Vincent van Gogh. During the presentation, there will be several opportunities for your students to practice critiquing art. They will be asked to compare and contrast paintings by van Gogh and photographs of sunflowers. They will also be asked to use descriptive words to talk about the colors, textures, and patterns found in the paintings and photographs.

Draw a Sunflower

The students can use the roll and draw sheet and dice to roll for the vase design and drawing of 3 sunflowers.

The students could turn the sunflower drawing into a wide variety of finished art projects. Watercolors, oil pastels, and salt are used in the thumbnail example.

I’ve provided a variety of drawing templates that can be printed out and used for students to draw on. This is purely optional, and blank paper can also be used.

Write About Your Art

After finishing up the artwork, there is a sheet for students to describe their artwork. Rubrics and writing goals are also a part of this lesson kit, along with information about the elements of art and principles of design.
