Valentine's Day Science Stations/Labs/Lessons

Looking for a fun way to celebrate this Valentine's Day with your students? Your students will love doing these four Valentine's themed activities/labs which investigate the most popular symbols of the season. Here is a brief description of each activity included:

Activity: “Crazy Hearts”
In this activity students will be investigating a chemical reaction between Conversation Candy Hearts and baking soda. First they will observe the fizzing Candy Hearts and then they will need to design an experiment to determine what is causing the reaction!

Skills focus: acids & bases, experimental design, controlling variables.

Activity: “Chameleon Carnations”
In this activity students will be investigating transpiration in plants as well as cohesion of water molecules. Students will perform a magic trick that will turn a white carnation flower to a colour of their choosing!

Activity: “Melting Moments”
In this delicious activity, students will explore the melting of different types of chocolate (milk, dark and white). They will investigate why some types of chocolate melts more quickly than others.

Skills focus: states of matter, scientific method, variables

Activity: “Bath Fizzies”
In this activity students will be making bath fizzies! These make a great gift that students can take home, sell as a fundraiser or give away as gifts to staff members…wink wink…

Skills focus: acids & bases, chemical reactions
