Description

Valentine's Day Reader! This interactive reader is meant to teach your students about Valentine's Day while allowing students to interact with the text in meaningful ways. The following standards are reviewed in this reader.

RI.1 (Asking and Answering Questions)

RI. 2 (Main idea)

RI. 4 (Word meaning)

RI. 7 (Illustrations to match the text)

An assessment sheet is also attached with a general rubric for standards-based assessments provided.

Your students will have fun reading and learning all about Valentine's Day. This download includes 7 student pages and offers opportunities to:

• learn facts

• determine main idea (CC.RI.2.2)

* understand key vocabulary {symbols, Cupid etc.} (CC.RI.2.4)

* ask and answer questions (CC.RI.2.1)

* create illustrations to match the text (CC.RI.2.7)

Parts of the book have the language of an informational text {factual and all about}. If you're currently working on an informational writing unit of study, this little text is a nice connection. Idea: Students can research additional information and add "Wow Facts" or "Did You Know" bubbles to certain pages in the book.

Directions: Cut the pages in half, assemble, and staple. Allow some time for coloring and illustrating. Use during shared reading or small group reading instruction. Teach the key vocabulary and let the children write definitions in their own words and/or draw pictures to show the meaning of the words. Also, allow students to ask and answer questions about the text. Reread individually or in pairs.

Thank you for your interest!

* This may be difficult for first grade. This would require a great deal of support.
