Description

Using line graphs to report on product performance-

Business English student

Level: Pre-intermediate

BEFORE: Send the student a couple of line charts similar to those she uses in her role along with a glossary of terms used to describe them, e.g. peak, trough, plummet, soar, decline, climb etc. The student should use the glossary to label the graphs as much as possible and look up any words they are unfamiliar with. The student should also send the teacher 3 or 4 line graphs they use in their role.

This student works for a large multinational company and has a number of things in English, including talking to customers and colleagues on the telephone in English, and attending meetings and conferences in English. They would like to change jobs to a similar role in the next few months. Their level is intermediate.

You must use one of these topics for your lesson - remember you need to use only one of these:

  • Choosing and applying for a job
  • The job interview
  • Improving your listening skills on the telephone
  • Politely interrupting on the telephone
  • Dealing with a telephone complaint

NOTE: remember to make sure your target language is 8 to 10 useful phrases for the topic you choose. So, give these to your students in the before stage.

For a lesson plan. Here are a few important things to remember.

1.    Use a before/during/after lesson plan.

This means that:

Before - you need to send your student some activities to do connected to the theme you have chosen to prepare them for the lesson. You could use a text or a listening resource here, or perhaps ask them to prepare some ideas or do some research before the lesson. Remember though sometimes a student won't have time to so make sure your lesson isn't solely based around them having completed these activities.

During - this is the lesson itself and for this lesson is 30 minutes long. This should be mainly speaking and listening based and you will need enough activities to last 30 minutes. Aim for as much STT as possible and remember to add timings to each individual activity you have here.

After - give your student something after class based on what you have done in the lesson, perhaps a writing activity.

2.    You must use your own resources here.

Using texts and other resources is acceptable but please reference them and create any exercises and activities you use yourself.

3.    Make sure your lesson is suitable for the level of your student.

4.    Now have a look at our example lesson plan to give you some final ideas. This lesson plan is for a pre-intermediate level Business English student and you can't choose this topic for your own assignment.
