What educators are saying

My students found the activity VERY interesting and engaging. Many students remembered key details from the excerpt months after we had read it in class due to how engaging the material was.
I teach an elective class about the 20th century, decade by decade. It is full of middle school students who LOVE history. They found this passage to be engaging, and we had a lot of fun discussing it in class.

Description

This great resource for teaching the Industrial Revolution includes a short excerpt from Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle," which students read to gain an understanding of the atrocious conditions in America's meatpacking plants.

The excerpt graphically details the dangerous and unsanitary conditions that led to an uproar in America and eventual legislation like the pure Food and Drug Act.

A worksheet is also included with reading analysis and opinion questions for students to answer based on what they read. This is an excellent primary source to use as a reading because it's easy to understand and really captivates students with graphic imagery. An answer key for the worksheet is included for your convenience.

Also included is an interactive notebook page in which students cut out a graphic organizer and describe what they read. This features excellent primary source visuals to help students match what they read from Sinclair's The Jungle to the pictures they see.

Finally, there is an editable Google Doc version of the reading and worksheet with links to learn more.
