What educators are saying

Great project idea. I did this at the end of the year for seniors. The presentations were engaging and interesting.

Description

Research is hard, but student engagement and choice can make the process much easier and rewarding. Everyone is fascinated by the unknown and unexplained. This project capitalizes on this intrigue. I use this project to master MLA format, work collaboratively, and present in academic and formal language.

I use this Google slides presentation as a template in Google classroom. Students work in small groups to explore an unsolved mystery of their own choice. There are plenty of projects like this out there, but I adapted mine to dig just a little deeper into the origin of the word mystery in order to explore an essential question. This projects also asks students to think critically about the quality of their sources, and use of primary vs secondary information. Finally, a complete works cited at the end gives you a chance to reinforce MLA format.

I have successfully used this project with small scaffolds and adaptations in 9, 10, and 11 grade classes.
