What educators are saying

My students love these, and so do I! I have used these for the whole class, in a competitive relay manner, as well as for early finishers to work on independently. Both methods worked well in my classroom. The students were engaged, practicing important reading skills, and having a blast!
This resource is just what I needed to keep my students engaged. They loved the different themes. Great product!

    BLOOM’S TAXONOMY:

This game was designed to take our students beyond a basic, surface-level understanding. We want them to dig deeper, to stretch their understanding of each skill and to become masters of grade-level reading standards. After considering many options, we decided Bloom’s Taxonomy would be the best approach to help us make this happen.

There are six levels in the game to match the six levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Students begin at Level 1, Remember. As they move from level to level, the depth of the questions increases. All six levels of the game focus on the same skill, but each level approaches the skill in a different way. After completing level 6, students have challenged their minds in new and unique ways that will help them have a deeper understanding of each reading skill.

    HOW TO PLAY THE GAME:

There is no “right way” to play this game. You can send students through the challenges individually or in teams, whatever works best for your class. You can complete the challenges in one day or stretch them out over a few days. Some students may not finish all challenges, and that’s okay! The amount of effort and learning that takes place during the game is so intense that they don’t need to finish everything to benefit.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PLAY?

The length of the game is something you can alter to fit your schedule. Traditionally, the game takes about 2 class periods, but teachers have played it in many ways as well.

    WHAT DO THE STUDENTS DO?

The Unlock game board has a start and finish. Each rectangular game piece on the game board represents a “challenge” that students must complete in order to move their individual game piece to the next challenge. In this game, students start at the bottom at challenge #1 and move up the game board. The goal is for students to successfully get their game piece to the top at challenge #6, where they “Unlock” the game! If you choose to use our optional detours, they are “mini stops” that give students a quick break between challenges.

    WHAT DOES THE TEACHER DO?

During the game, encourage students to problem solve, persevere, and help each other when they come to a problem that is difficult. Coach individual students through difficult challenges. Reteach skills as needed. After the game, have a class discussion about how the game went and celebrate successes together!

**Each game comes in a zip file. Within the zip file are 3 separate pdf files. See table of contents for clarification.
