What educators are saying

This was a great activity for students to build their own unit circle and understand the meaning of it.
I used this to introduce students to the unit circle. Our paper plates were a little thick so folding them was challenging. One of my average student was naming the radians before I told them. The dividing of it into the fractional parts helped him to visualize it.

Description

This guide will assist teachers in teaching the unit circle without memorization. By doing this activity, students will have a deep understanding of how degrees, coordinates, special right triangles, and the circumference of a circle all relate to form the unit circle.

It includes a detailed lesson plan with step-by-step directions for teaching with a paper plate, the template for the triangles measured to match the paper plate, and a blank unit circle template for assessing students' understanding.

Do your students need a review of special right triangles? Try these Special Right Triangle Task Cards!

Understand radian measure of an angle as the length of the arc on the unit circle subtended by the angle.
Explain how the unit circle in the coordinate plane enables the extension of trigonometric functions to all real numbers, interpreted as radian measures of angles traversed counterclockwise around the unit circle.
Use special triangles to determine geometrically the values of sine, cosine, tangent for π/3, π/4 and π/6, and use the unit circle to express the values of sine, cosine, and tangent for π–𝘹, π+𝘹, and 2π–𝘹 in terms of their values for 𝘹, where 𝘹 is any real number.
