What educators are saying

I teach 5th grade and am using this with some of my students who need a little extra push to engage them during independent work. This is challenging for them but great and gets them thinking!
This resource was sufficiently detailed to provide useful scaffolding for the children who needed more help but it also provided challenge for the more independent learners.

Description

Teach your students to edit and revise their writing by having them practice improving simple paragraphs. This resource contains five unelaborated paragraphs about engaging argumentative topics, along with a checklist to help students improve the paragraph. Students first annotate the paragraph with questions to help them generate additional information to flesh out the argument, and then apply various strategies to add interest and variety to the text. Practicing these skills with someone else's writing will help your students think about how they can improve their own writing through editing and revision.

This resource includes 5 worksheets, each containing:

  • An unelaborated paragraph on an engaging argumentative topic.
  • Space to annotate the paragraph with questions.
  • A checklist of strategies to improve the paragraph.
  • Space to rewrite the improved paragraph.
  • A sample answers page for each paragraph, with suggestions for questions to ask about the text and an example of an improved paragraph on each topic.

The topics explored in the paragraphs are:

  • Zoos
  • Cyber bullying
  • Graffiti
  • Violence in video games
  • Distractions from technology

All parts of this resource are provided as printable PDF worksheets, and the resource can also be used on Easel!
