Description

FEATURED IN BC TEACHER'S "LEARN" MAGAZINE, AS WELL AS NEWSPAPER ARTICLES AND FEDERALLY-DISTRIBUTED "FINANCIAL CONSUMER AGENCY OF CANADA" NEWSLETTER.

This bundle includes everything you need to set up a classroom economics system, or token economy in a French Immersion classroom. A 79-page Teacher’s Manual takes you through the process, step-by-step. While the manual is in English, almost all of the accompanying documents/handouts for students are translated into French. All parent communication messages are in English since French Immersion parents often don’t speak French.

For most components of the system, there are two teachable versions offered:

1. the “HOLD THE SAUCE” version – a quick, sometimes 5-minute process that

can easily fit into an already jam-packed school day, or…

2. the “FULL MEAL DEAL” version – an in-depth lesson that allows teachers to meet a host of curriculum standards while zoning in on critical financial literacy concepts

Teachers have the freedom to use the HOLD THE SAUCE version for one component, while choosing the FULL MEAL DEAL for another. This adaptability makes the system manageable for everyone, from the busiest of teachers, to those who want to fully dive in and commit to making financial literacy a focal point in their classrooms.

The manual further differentiates by dividing components into 3 main sections:

1. GETTING STARTED – everything teachers need to know for setting the system up to run smoothly in their classrooms, from materials lists to suggested prep work

2. THE BASICS – the minimal components that should be taught for the system to run smoothly

3. THE EXTRAS – additional financial literacy components that can be added if time allows and if the teacher and students are hungry for more real-world experiences

Within every section is a description of its accompanying resources and where to find them within the document files. Accompanying resources are all in student-friendly language, making them accessible to students as young as Grade 5, but challenging enough in content for students up to the high school level.

ASSESSMENT TOOLS are also listed in the manual under several sections, with rubrics or checklists available for the following curricular areas:

- Career Education

- Math

- Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies

- Writing

- Group Work

- Oral Presentations

In addition, a Financial Literacy Assessment is available for teachers who wish to test their students’ basic financial knowledge at the beginning of the year, in comparison with the end of the year after students have been using the system on a regular basis.

Due to the cross-curricular nature of the system, the manual also lays out how teachers can use the content as a springboard to meet standards for Social Studies and Visual Arts, as well as all of the Core Competencies that are at the heart of the BC Curriculum (Canada).

Depending on the topics that the teacher wishes to cover (and to what extent), the manual and resources touch on the following concepts:

- JOB APPLICATION: Applying for jobs, learning how to write rsumés and cover letters, and how to ace an interview

- SALARIES: Receiving a salary for classroom jobs, with taxes taken out of students’ pay checks

- RENT/MORTGAGE: Paying rent/mortgage for students’ desks (their “condominiums”)

- BANK ACCOUNTS: the differences between a CHEQUING and a SAVINGS account

- GENEROSITY: the value of GIVING

- PERSONAL GROWTH: Receiving compensation and motivation for achieving personal goals and demonstrating good social responsibility

- BUDGETING: Creating monthly budgets, learning how to set money aside for giving, saving and spending

- HOME OWNERSHIP: the value of home ownership

- ENTREPRENEURSHIP: the value of entrepreneurship, offering students opportunities to create money-making in-class businesses of their own

- CREDIT CARDS: students use their very own classroom credit cards to make purchases, while learning lessons about the advantages and disadvantages/dangers of credit cards

- PHISHING: what it is and how to avoid it

- CHEQUES: how to write cheques and when students will need to use them

- TAXES: what they are and how to file them

- INVESTMENTS: investing in stocks, bonds, GICs and other investments

- “DOSES OF REALITY”: realizing that sometimes life serves you a “dose of reality” and unforeseen circumstances can either become costly or beneficial – a game of chance

The system is designed to mimic reality as closely as possible, all while maintaining an atmosphere of creativity, fun, and exploration. It also serves as an excellent classroom management tool; though initial set-up takes some time and attention, when everyone in the class has gotten into a good rhythm, classroom management can run like clockwork with only minor oversight needed from the teacher.

**IMPORTANT**: all non-PDF files (anything for Word or Excel) use a free, downloadable font called KG Primary Penmanship. If you do not download this font, the formatting will look very strange. Simply do a Google Search for “KG Primary Penmanship font” to find it and download it for your computer. If you don’t know how to add a font to your computer, do a Google search for “How to add fonts to PC” or “How to add fonts to Mac” and you will find quick step-by-step instructions.
